What a briefing transcript is

A briefing transcript is published by the office that held the briefing. None of the pages read for this guide states whether its transcripts are published as delivered or edited 1,3 5. This differs from parliamentary records such as Australian Hansard, where the editing rules are published 7.

Australian Hansard itself includes transcripts of some events such as lectures, speeches and press conferences 7.

United States

The State Department's Press Briefings page held 115 transcripts when read, with filters for year, month, speaker, location, release type and bureau 1. It includes special briefings held virtually or digitally 1.

The White House Briefings & Statements page gives each item the same category label and a date. Remarks appears as a filter option next to Releases, Presidential Actions and Fact Sheets 2.

United Nations

The Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General provides information to the media on the activities of the UN system 3. For each noon briefing it posts highlights and a full transcript, and links video through UN Web TV and a YouTube playlist 3. When read, the video for the 5 November 2026 briefing was marked as not yet available 3.

UN Meetings Coverage lists each briefing as a Daily Press Briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General 4. Its meeting press releases are synopses, not transcripts 9.

Australia and India

The Prime Minister of Australia's Media page labels items as Joint statement, Speech, Transcript or Media release 5. Some items carry two labels, such as Speech and Transcript 5.

India's Ministry of External Affairs has a Transcripts section under Media Briefings. The page read was last updated on 25 May 2026 6.

Checking a quote from a briefing

The IFCN Code of Principles asks fact-checkers to use the best available primary sources and to name the source of all significant evidence 8. For a briefing, that means the publisher's own transcript and, where posted, the video 8,3. A summary such as UN highlights is not the full text 3.
